If you or your child regularly participate in sports like football, soccer, or hockey, an athletic mouthguard may be strongly recommended or required to attend practices and games. It can be trickier for patients to tell if they need a nightguard, however, as it’s not always obvious to the patient if they are grinding their teeth at night. If you frequently wake up with jaw soreness or you notice your gums receding, that can be indicative of bruxism. Our team can also assess your teeth and gums for signs of damage and let you know if we believe you need a custom nightguard.
How can I get a custom nightguard or athletic mouthguard?
Getting a custom oral appliance requires impressions of the teeth to be taken, which can be done either at the end of a routine visit, or we would be happy to schedule a quick appointment for you to come see us. Once we have accurate dental impressions, we will send them to an off-site lab to have your custom mouthguard or nightguard created. We typically receive custom oral appliances in about one to two weeks, and we will schedule another short visit for you to come in, try it on, and take it home after any necessary adjustments are made.
Are custom oral appliances worth it?
Patients who only need a custom mouthguard a few times per year may not find it necessary to invest in a custom mouthguard. However, if you are someone who needs to wear a mouthguard on a regular basis, getting one that is personalized for your smile tends to be a great investment, as patients are more likely to wear mouthguards that feel comfortable. Our durable mouthguards are also designed to last for many years before they need to be replaced.
