How to Prevent Tartar Build-Up

Have you ever run your tongue over your teeth and felt that weird fuzzy feeling? That’s plaque, a product of the bacteria and food that’s left to build up on your teeth. It not only doesn’t feel so great to have plaque coated on your teeth, but it can also lead to issues like cavities and gum disease. Also, when plaque isn’t addressed, it eventually hardens into tartar, which is sometimes called calculus. Plaque can be removed with proper at-home dental care, but tartar can only be removed by a dental professional.

Be Vigilant About Your At-Home Dental Care

One of the best things you can do to avoid tartar build-up is have a healthy dental care routine and stick to it. Never forget to brush twice a day for two minutes each time using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should also be flossing at least once a day to get rid of any food or bacteria hiding out between your teeth. If you really want a clean mouth, you can enhance your routine by water flossing.

Watch What You Eat

We’re not going to prescribe a particular diet just to avoid tartar. However, it is a fact that if you eat a lot of starchy and sugary foods, you increase your chances of plaque build up. It’s a good idea to make sure to clean your teeth properly after eating or snacking. If it isn’t practical to brush immediately, rinse your mouth out with water so that food particles are washed away before they can become plaque.

Regularly Visit the Dentist

Dr. Bethea isn’t just there for you when you have a dental problem. Rather, his goal is to help you prevent dental problems! When tartar is left in place you are more at risk for gum disease and tooth decay. By keeping up with your regular dental appointments twice a year, you can help keep your teeth squeaky clean. During these routine visits, the Bethea Family Dentistry team will clean away any plaque present so there’s less chance of it building up into tartar. We’ll also be on the lookout for any other problems before they become bigger issues.
